RÉSUMÉ/SUMMARY OF TALK

Annie Cohen-Solal travaille sur le monde de l’art dans une perspective d’histoire sociale. Elle y étudie les liens entre ses différents acteurs, et elle a choisi de s’intéresser plus spécialement aujourd’hui à la rencontre entre Picasso et Gertrude Stein. Parmi les documents analysés, qui rendent compte d’un Paris au début du xx^e siècle, figure la correspondance entre eux deux, et d’elle découle le processus créatif lié au Portrait de Gertrude Stein, peint par Picasso en 1905-1906. Comment deux émigrés – un Espagnol et une Américaine – ont-ils fabriqué, en pionniers, le modèle de communication interculturelle qui a préfiguré la culture globale qui est la nôtre plus d’un siècle plus tard ?

Annie Cohen-Solal’s research generally focuses on art from the perspective of social history. Following her studies on the interactions between different agents of the art world, she now explores the relationship between Pablo Picasso and Gertrude Stein. Among the documents that she analyses are those relating to the state of Paris in the early 20^th century, the exchange of letters between Picasso and Stein, and the creative process of Portrait of Gertrude Stein, painted by Picasso in 1905-1906. Cohen-Solal’s talk demonstrates that the two migrants–Picasso came from Spain, Stein from the USA–behaved as true pioneers, managing to create a brand new model of intercultural communication that prefigures the global culture of our time.

Docteur ès lettres, professeur des universités, Annie Cohen-Solal a enseigné à la Freie Universität Berlin, l’université hébraïque de Jérusalem, la New York University (NYU), l’université de Caen, l’École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) et l’École normale supérieure (ENS). Après son Sartre, 1905-1980, elle a été nommée conseiller culturel aux États-Unis et a consacré de nombreux ouvrages, articles et émissions radiophoniques au monde de l’art américain, parmi lesquels : « Un jour, ils auront des peintres » : l’avènement des peintres américains (Paris 1867-New York 1948) ; Leo Castelli et les siens ; Mark Rothko ; New York 1945-1965 (avec Paul Goldberger et Robert Gottlieb). Elle a été commissaire générale de l’exposition « Magiciens de la terre, retour sur une exposition légendaire » au Centre Pompidou (2014), et a publié, avec Jean-Hubert Martin, Magiciens de la terre : retour sur une exposition légendaire (Paris, Centre Pompidou, 2014). Elle est codirectrice du groupe de travail « Crossing Boundaries » au Center for Advanced Study in the Behavorial Sciences (CASBS) de Stanford University et chercheur associé au Labex TransferS (ENS).

Annie Cohen-Solal, PhD, is an academic and a writer specialising in social history. She has taught at the Freie Universität Berlin, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, New York University, the University of Caen, the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), and the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS). Her books, which have been translated into many languages, include Sartre, A Life; Painting American; Leo & His Circle: The Life of Leo Castelli; New York 1945-1965 (with Paul Goldberger and Robert Gottlieb); Mark Rothko: Towards the Light in the Chapel. She served as the Cultural Counselor to the French Embassy in the United States. As the curator at large of the exhibition Magiciens de la terre 2014, Centre Pompidou, Paris, she published with Jean-Hubert Martin, Magiciens de la terre. Retour sur une exposition légendaire (Paris, Ed. du Centre Pompidou, 2014). She is the co-director of the Crossing Boundaries workshop at CASBS, Stanford University, and senior associate researcher at the Labex TransferS (ENS).
